DONS AT A GLANCE:
- San Francisco enters the mid-week matchup against Washington in a tie for second place in the WCC standings with a 5-3 overall record. The green and gold powered their way to a series win over Central Michigan last weekend, winning three of the four games.
- Patrick Keighran earned Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Week as he led the offensively throughout the series as he posted a .545 batting average with six hits in 11 at-bats, five extra-base hits, five walks, and nine RBI.
- Recording his first career home run in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22, Eddison Esquivel followed with a grand slam in the series finale on Sunday, Feb. 23. Earning Rawlings West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week, Esquivel concluded the series against the Chippewas with a .308/.400/.923 slash line, four hits, two home runs, four runs scored, and 10 RBI.
- Joe Soberon, Lance Santerre, and Aidan Risse combined for a 3.16 earned-run average in the series, allowing just six earned runs in 17.1 innings against Central Michigan. Soberon and Santerre pitched six strong innings, while Risse totaled 5.1 in the series finale.
- Offensively as a team, San Francisco leads the conference in batting average (.326), hits (91), extra-base hits (39), home runs (13), RBI (75), slugging percentage (.563), on-base percentage (.450), and runs scored (78).
- The Dons are averaging 9.8 runs per game through the first eight games of the season while posting double-digit runs five times. In 2024, the green and gold recorded 10 or more runs in a game seven times.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES:
- Washington enters Wednesday with a 2-6 record after dropping a four-game series at Stanford last week. Despite the series loss, the Huskies scored a combined 17 runs in four games, including nine in the narrow 11-9 defeat on Saturday, Feb. 22.
- Trevor Cole leads Washington offensively, totaling a .345 batting average with 10 hits in 29 at-bats. Against Stanford, Cole went four-for-15, recorded one home run, two RBI, and scored two runs. In eight games, he has recorded four multi-hit games, including a stellar two-for-four performance with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored in the 9-2 win over Kansas State in the season opener on February 14.
- On the mound, Max Banks leads the Huskies with a 1.50 earned-run average, allowing just two runs in 12.0 innings. Pitching six innings in both starts this season, he shut out Kansas State as he allowed two hits and posted a game-high nine strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS:
- Coming off a narrow 4-3 loss to Santa Clara at home on Tuesday, Feb. 25, San Jose State holds a 6-2 overall record, its best start since the 2019 season.
- In the loss to the Broncos, Rocco Caballero recorded two of the Spartans' seven hits as he went two-for-five at the plate with an RBI. In four solid innings out of the bullpen, Luca Staiano allowed just one run on four hits and struck out a game-high five batters.
- San Jose State has five players batting over .300 through eight games, with Alex Fernandes leading the program at .458. Starting seven of the eight games this season, Fernandes has recorded 11 hits, two extra-base hits, five RBI, and a team-best .625 slugging percentage.
- EJ McGrew and Tyler Albanese lead San Jose State on the mound, as the duo has a combined 0.64 earned-run average, as McGrew has yet to allow a run in eight innings pitched.
SERIES HISTORY:
- San Francisco holds a 3-0 record against Washington in the last meeting i16 years ago, sweeping the Huskies in a three-game series on March 13-15, 2009, on the road.
- Facing off 44 times in the last 19 years, San Francisco holds a narrow 24-19 edge over San Jose State since 2006. Going back and forth in recent years, the Dons have won five of the last nine meetings, including a season sweep of the Spartans in 2024.
