Dons Outlast Broncos, Secure Series Win in the South Bay

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (12-12, 2-1 WCC) secured its first West Coast Conference series victory Sunday afternoon, defeating Santa Clara (9-11, 1-2 WCC) 5-3 at Stephen Schott Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • After failing to score despite threatening in the first two frames, San Francisco jumped ahead in the top of the third, gaining a 1-0 advantage. Kody Watanabe scored the go-ahead run, rounding the bases on a TJ Rogers two-out RBI double to left center field.
  • The Dons added to their lead in the following frame as Matteo Bellisimo connected on a solo home run to right field, pushing the margin to 2-0.
  • Santa Clara broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 advantage. With two on and no outs, Dylan Joyce recorded a three-run home in a two-pitch at-bat to left-center field.
  • In the fifth, the green and gold tied the game at three after Rogers and Patrick Keighran posted back-to-back doubles. Keighran later scored to give San Francisco a 4-3 edge on two straight wild pitches from pitcher Caden Wooster.
  • An insurance run came across for the Dons in the seventh, as Jordan Lewis scored on a Bellisimo RBI single through the left side of the infield, extending the lead to 5-3.
  • Quentin Pohorski pitched the final three innings as he shut out the Broncos to preserve the victory for the green and gold.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Bellisimo notched his second multi-hit game of the season, going two-for-four at the plate with a home run, a team-leading two RBI, and scored a run.
  • Along with Bellissimo's offensive performance, Watanabe, Rogers, and Keighran also recorded multiple base hits. Watanabe led the program, going three-for-five and scoring one run.
  • Earning the start on the mound for the sixth time, Aidan Risse pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, and struck out two batters.
  • Hunter Holzemer earned the win, appearing out of the bullpen for 1.2 innings and allowing one hit and two walks.
  • Recording his league-leading fourth save of the season, Pohorski pitched the game's final three innings to secure the victory. He allowed only one baserunner throughout his outing while fanning two batters.
