DONS AT A GLANCE:
- San Francisco split its four games last week, highlighted by a series win at Santa Clara to begin West Coast Conference play. The green and gold also dropped a narrow 10-6 non-conference decision to California at home on Monday, Mar. 24, at Benedetti Diamond.
- Patrick Keighran led the Dons offensively at Santa Clara, accumulating a .500 batting average with five hits in 10 at-bats, two doubles, two RBI, two walks, and a stolen base. In the narrow loss to California, Keighran added three more base hits, including the game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- Through 25 games this season, he has recorded a stellar .313 batting average, a team-leading 1.056 OPS, nine doubles, four home runs, a .575 slugging percentage, and is a perfect eight-for-eight on stolen base attempts.
- The Dons continue to have success at the plate this season, with four players batting .300 or better in 25 games played. Jordan Lewis and Keighran lead the program at .313, while Trevor Harmon (.302) and TJ Rogers (.300) have helped guide the green and gold offensively.
- Eddison Esquivel has recorded an impressive .283 batting average, three doubles, four home runs, and 19 RBI in 17 games. Esquivel's 8.70 home run percentage is second in the WCC among players with at least 40 at-bats and ranks third in slugging percentage (.609) and fifth in OPS (.998).
- Lance Santerre and Aidan Risse have led San Francisco on the mound, combining for a 4.35 earned-run average and 39 strikeouts in 55.3 innings. Risse has posted a team-best 4.08 ERA, allowing 13 runs in 28.2 innings and 22 strikeouts. He has pitched at least five innings in four of his six outings while allowing two or fewer earned runs four times.
- Home runs have been a difference-maker for the Dons at the start of the campaign, as 16 of the 19 players who have seen action have recorded at least one long ball. Esquivel and Keighran have totaled a team-leading four, while Rogers, Lewis, Harmon, JT Amaral, and Matteo Bellisimo have posted three apiece.
- As a team offensively, San Francisco ranks fourth in the WCC in batting average (.256) and hits (209), second in doubles (44) and stolen bases (40), third in RBI (141), slugging percentage (.434), and walks (99), and first in home runs (33). Along with leading the league in home runs, the Dons' 33 long balls rank tied for 50th in the nation.
SCOUTING THE GAELS:
- Saint Mary's enters the weekend with an even 12-12 record and is coming off a 7-2 home loss to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, Mar. 25. Ian Armstrong and Ryan Pierce provided the Gaels with offense throughout the contest with a solo home run and an RBI single.
- Offensively for the Gaels, Eddie Madrigal leads the program with a .378 batting average, 31 hits, seven home runs, and a .720 slugging percentage. Appearing and starting in all 24 games this season, Madrigal has posted nine multi-hit games, including recording a season-high three hits four times.
- Along with Madrigal, three other players have recorded a .300 batting average or better, with Cody Kashimoto (.366), Diego Castellanos (.333), and Aiden Taurek (.303) guiding the Gaels at the plate.
- Dylan Delvecchio has been Saint Mary's best starting pitcher, accumulating a 3.00 earned-run average in 24.0 innings pitched. Posting a perfect 2-0 record in six starts, Delvecchio leads the Gaels with 35 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .180 batting average.Â
SERIES HISTORY:
Since the 2006 season, San Francisco holds a narrow edge over Saint Mary's in the all-time series, winning 31 of the 56 games. Despite holding a winning record in the last 19 seasons, the Gaels have won eight of the previous 10, including earning the three-game sweep over the Dons in Moraga last season.
