San Francisco Secures Series with Doubleheader Split Against Saint Mary's

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (14-14, 4-2 WCC) clinched the series win against Saint Mary's (13-14, 1-2 WCC) with a split decision in Saturday's doubleheader at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

GAME ONE: Saint Mary's 7, San Francisco 3
  • After two scoreless innings, Tyler Harries broke the deadlock with a two-run home run, giving San Francisco a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Saint Mary's scored its first run in the top of the fifth when Diego Castellanos drew a bases-loaded walk off of starting pitcher Joe Soberon. The Dons, however, ended the Gaels' threat shortly after with a double play to end the frame.
  • The Gaels leveled the game at two later in the seventh inning when Diego Castellanos lined an RBI double to bring in Eddie Madrigal.
  • With the game tied at two in the top of the ninth, Bria Duroff drove in Castellanos with an RBI double, giving Saint Mary's a 3-2 lead. The Dons limited the damage, as Quentin Pohorski secured the final out with a line drive catch.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Trevor Harmon reached on a hit-by-pitch, and then Zach Ramppen laid down a perfect bunt to put Harmon in scoring position. Harries singled to bring in the tying run, and the Gaels walked Kody Watanabe to load the bases. Despite the prime scoring opportunity, the Dons failed to convert, sending the game into extra innings.
  • Tanner Griffith put Saint Mary's on top with a go-ahead RBI double in the 10th, making it 4-3. Madrigal followed with a three-run homer, extending the Gaels' lead to 7-3. The Dons could not respond as the Gaels earned the 7-3 victory.
GAME TWO: San Francisco 10, Saint Mary's 4
  • TJ Rogers opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double, plating Kenny DeCelle to give San Francisco an early 1-0 lead.
  • Cody Kashimoto reached on a fielding error by third baseman Kody Watanabe, allowing Aiden Taurek to cross the plate to even the score at one.
  • Matty Fung led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single before a fielding error, and a walk loaded the bases for Rogers, who crushed a grand slam to left field to put the Dons up 5-1. Harmon kept the momentum going with an RBI double, scoring Jordan Lewis, and Zach Ramppen followed with an RBI single to bring Harmon home, extending the lead to 7-1.
  • The Dons added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, with a Rogers single to score Harries. Eddison Esquivel launched a deep drive to the outfield later on, bringing Rogers across the plate.
  • Harmon continued his success at the plate, taking advantage of a wild pitch and scoring from third base to make it 10-1 for the Dons.
  • The Gaels mounted a comeback in the ninth, scoring three runs to cut the lead to 10-4, but they failed to complete the rally.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Earning the start in right field for both doubleheader games, Fung led San Francisco offensively, batting .714 with five hits in seven at-bats. Playing a crucial role in the 10-4 victory over the Gaels, Fung went three-for-four at the plate and scored a run.
  • After going hitless in the first game of the doubleheader, Rogers totaled two hits in five at-bats, a grand-slam home run, and a career-high six RBI.
  • On the mound, Aidan Risse earned the win in the series finale as he pitched seven solid innings, allowing one run on five hits and recorded five strikeouts.
  • As a team, San Francisco posted a .282 batting average and totaled 20 base hits in two games. The Dons also hit two home runs throughout the doubleheader, extending the program's home run streak to five straight.
