SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco baseball team (17-24) earned a bounce-back victory over San Jose State (20-21) in a narrow 3-2 decision Tuesday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Jose State jumped out to an early first-inning lead when Zach Chamizo recorded a long solo home run over the right-center field wall for a 1-0 lead.
- San Francisco answered in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs to take a 2-1 advantage. Kody Watanabe set the tone with a lead-off triple and later tied the game at one apiece on a Kenny DeCelle sacrifice fly. Eddison Esquivel followed with a solo home run to right field, supplying the Dons with their first lead of the game.
- Tying the game at two in the third inning, Zach Tallerman hit a booming home run to left, getting the Spartans back into the contest.
- Following two scoreless frames, the Dons regained the lead in the sixth on a Logan Schweizer go-ahead RBI single, scoring Nick Walsh for a 3-2 edge. With two runners aboard after Walsh and Matty Fung reached on hit-by-pitches, Walsh later rounded third to score as Schweizer poked a soft ground ball up the middle.
- Keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard in the final six innings, Cal Amborn picked up the save as he pitched the final two frames to secure the 3-2 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Five players recorded base hits throughout the contest, with Fung posting his fifth multi-hit game of the season with two hits in three at-bats. Watanabe, Esquivel, Walsh, and Schweizer also reached the hit column with one apiece.
- Esquivel went one-for-three at the plate with a walk, a home run, an RBI, and one run scored. Connecting on his third long ball in the last five games, the reigning WCC Freshman of the Week extended his total to a team-leading nine in 32 games.
- Adam Shew earned the start on the mound, pitching two solid innings, allowing one run on four hits, and fanning one batter in his best outing this season.
- Kolby Calia and Amborn combined for four clean innings, allowing just one hit and recording three strikeouts. Amborn also picked up his second career save, allowing only one baserunner in two frames.
