Dons Shut Out Leathernecks in Season Opener

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Gabriel Barrett and Quentin Pohorski combined for a four-hit shutout as the University of San Francisco baseball team (1-0) earned a 2-0 victory over Western Illinois (0-1) Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning to secure the victory. With the bases loaded and no outs, Tino Vasell punched an RBI single to center field for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Eddison Esquivel followed shortly after with a single to left field, scoring Jared Lewis, giving the green and gold a 2-0 lead.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • San Francisco accumulated seven hits throughout the contest, with Esquivel going two-for-four with an RBI to lead the team.
  • Jayden Garrison, Brendan Burke, Zack Ramppen, Jackson Nystrom, and Vasell also registered base hits.
  • Barrett, in his first-ever opening day start, recorded five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out five batters.
  • Pohorski finished the final four innings, completing the shutout with a career-best six strikeouts to earn the save.
  • The Dons' offense drew five walks, with Lewis recording a team-high three.
  • San Francisco held Western Illinois to just one hit in the final five innings and allowed two total baserunners.
