SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (15-13, 7-8 WCC) snapped its skid and bounced back in a big way on Sunday afternoon as the Dons used a second half burst to outlast San Diego (11-17, 5-10 WCC), 92-79, at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Vukasin Masic finished with a season-high 22 points while David Fuchs logged another double-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Guillermo Diaz Graham also helped out with a season-high 17 points of his own.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco started the scoring by netting the first six points of the contest, culminating in a bucket from Fuchs, to take an early lead with 17:14 left in the first half. San Diego regrouped and responded the rest of the half as the Toreros climbed back to hold a five-point lead heading into the locker room, 41-36.
- USF came out of the break firing on all cylinders by starting the second half on a 12-0 run, which was finished off by Legend Smiley's three-pointer, to seize a 48-41 lead at 18:23. San Diego continued to fight back on their home floor, but the Dons answered each time to keep expanding their margin. Growing the gap to as many as 17 points with 2:51 remaining in regulation, San Francisco coasted the rest of the way for the 92-79 win.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Fuchs' double-double marked his seventh so far this season and his second in the past three games. He has now finished in double figures 16 times this season, in addition to grabbing ten or more rebounds eight times.
- Masic's 22 points marked his season-high and his most in a Dons uniform. Notably, his four made three-pointers also marked a new season-high.
- Smiley continues to develop with each opportunity as the freshman logged double figures for the 11th time this season, and the sixth time in conference play.
- Diaz Graham finished in double figures for the sixth time this season, and the first time since Jan. 28 at Santa Clara.
- San Francisco won the battle on the boards, 30-23, and improved to 13-4 this season and 63-9 under head coach Chris Gerlufsen when they win the rebounding battle. USF also led San Diego in points in the paint (38-32), points off turnovers (15-13), and fast break points (22-6).
