John Montgomery concluded his first season at USF as director of basketball operations in 2015, following a six-year stay at the University of California. In his role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the basketball program, which included game scheduling, coordinating team travel, managing the Rex Walters’ Basketball School summer camps, serving as an academic liaison and spearheading various community service projects. He also assisted in recruiting efforts.
 
Prior to his appointment at USF, Montgomery spent six years at Cal, where he served as director of basketball operations for three seasons before being elevated to an assistant coach’s position for the 2011-12 season. He worked primarily with the team’s guards and aided in the development of Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Jorge Gutierrez along with all-conference honorees Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs. Crabbe earned Pac-12 Player of the Year honors in 2012-13 as a junior and currently plays for the Portland Trail Blazers. Montgomery also had responsibilities in the areas of recruiting and scouting along with his practice and game day duties.
 
In his three seasons on the coaching staff, Cal compiled a 66-36 record and made three post-season appearances, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament showings in 2011-12 and 2012-13. In 2012-13, Cal defeated UNLV in the second round before falling to eventual Final Four participant Syracuse.
 
Prior to his promotion, Montgomery coordinated all recruiting activities, oversaw team travel, served as the staff liaison for visiting teams and assisted in a variety of roles involving Cal’s summer camps.
 
Before his appointment at Cal, Montgomery spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
 
Montgomery was a four-year letterwinner as a point guard at Loyola Marymount. As a senior, he helped the Lions reach the finals of the Great Alaskan Shootout, nailing a three-pointer and adding three assists in the championship game against Cal. He started 12 of 30 games as a senior an averaged 5.5 points and 2.4 assists per game. He poured in a career high 20 points, dished out eight assists and went 3-for-6 from three-point range against Pepperdine. He also helped the Lions to a win over nationally-ranked Gonzaga, scoring 12 points and making three free throws in the last minute to seal the victory.
 
A native of Menlo Park, Calif., John earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in business administration from Loyola Marymount in 2007. He is the son of legendary basketball coach Mike Montgomery.
