Donald McLaughlin was born on November 27, 1929, in Novato, CA, and attended Saint Ignatius College Preparatory. After graduating from USF in 1951, he became a Sports Reporter and Editor for the Call-Bulletin, a former Hearst newspaper, and then moved to the Pacific Bell Company. He worked for AT&T for 30 years, and served as Assistant Vice President in Public Relations, until his retirement in 1985.

He then volunteered and worked at USF as an advisor to the Foghorn, and went on to create Sportstalk, the USF Athletic Department newsletter. His wife Marian said: “News got him started, and he stayed close to it. He always thought of himself as a newsman. He loved people. He loved sports. He used to drive me crazy with the sports. He would keep all these scores and come up with baseball percentages. All through school, when our kids were given assignments, he would take out his pen and start editing. The kids became good writers.”
