Gene “Tiny” Francis Cervelli was born on May 2, 1916 in San Jose and attended Galileo High School. At USF, at 6’, 255 lbs., he was captain and Intercollegiate Heavyweight Champion. The September 18, 1936 issue of the Foghorn noted, “Tiny’s presence will bolster the win column considerably, but more than that, under the leadership of such a fine character, the team as a whole should go to town.” Underscoring his talent, Cervelli was also a Golden Gloves Champion. He was also active in several student organizations and held student body elected offices.

Despite his 255 pounds and boxing talent, Cervelli was a very caring soul. A classmate recalls a bout in Sacramento where Cervelli wore USF’s vibrant green and gold robe into the ring. His opponent was so awed by the sight, he failed to maintain his concentration and lost the bout. Realizing his opponent’s distraction, Cervelli restrained his punches so as not to hurt his opponent.

Cervelli also played for the Don football and rugby teams. Cervelli moved with the agility and grace of a bantamweight and his dexterity enabled him to frequently crash the enemy backfield in football. The November 6, 1936, Foghorn noted that Tiny and fellow tackle Tom Rice “were especially outstanding as both spent most of their time in the opponent’s backfield. It was Tiny’s first opportunity since he came on the Hilltop and he came through with flying colors” as USF defeated Portland 16-0.

Following graduation in 1938, with a Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Cervelli coached boxing at San Francisco’s Salesian Boys' Club. Following World War II, he worked on the San Francisco waterfront until his retirement in 1981. He was President of the Fathers' Club of Holy Name School, a member of the Old Timers' Baseball Association of San Francisco, the Dolphin Swim Club, and the Ship Clerks Union.  He also served as a Grand Jury member for the City and County of San Francisco.
