Grant David Steer was born on April 17, 1948 in Salinas, CA, and attended his local Palma High School. He lettered in basketball, football and baseball in high school and was nicknamed “Moose” or “Bull” because of his last name.
 
He attended USF in the class of 1969, and played baseball for the Dons as an outfielder. At 6’ 1", 185 lbs., he batted and threw left. He graduated from USF with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics, and later from UCLA with a Master’s in Mathematics. After USF, he served in the United States Army, at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. for three months in 1969.
 
He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 11th Round of the 1969 MLB June Amateur Draft, and played for the Salt Lake City Bees, the Tri-City Padres, the Lodi Padres, and the Alexandria Aces from 1969 to 1972. He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1982.
