James William Mace was born on October 4, 1920 in Wilmot, SD. He was the oldest of eight children and was raised south of Market Street in San Francisco. He attended Commerce High School and attended USF in the class of 1939. At 5' 11", 182 lbs., he was on the Boxing Team as captain. He was a member of Kappa Lambda Sigma Literary Society, the Saint Ives Law Club, and the Varsity Debate Club as Captain. He was a recipient of the Alumni Award in 1939. Following graduation with a degree in Political Science, he coached the boxing team which included fellow Hall of Famers Dan Benedetti and Dan Fisk. 

He served in Europe during World war II as a Corporal in the United States Army Signal Corp from 1942 to 1945. He won championships in amateur boxing tournaments across the country, including Golden Gloves, Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Championship, and Pan American Games (SF Gate). He was a Northern California Claims Manager for the Department of Veterans Affairs and was an active volunteer in his church and community. 

He was inducted into the USF Hall of Fame in 1959.
