The San Francisco native and point guard for USF from 1961 to 1964, Brovelli helped the Dons to a 41-14 record, two WCAC conference titles and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in his final two seasons on the Hilltop. After spending time as an Assistant Coach under his former coach and mentor Pete Peletta, Brovelli was named Head Coach at San Diego, and he left the Toreros' program as the school's coach with the most all-time wins. Brovelli returned to his alma mater as Head Coach for the 1985-86 season to usher in a new era of Dons basketball. Under Brovelli, the Dons posted back-to-back winning seasons in 1993 (19-12) and 1994 (17-11) and finished second in the league standings in 1994.

His 131 coaching victories on the Hilltop rank fourth all-time among USF head coaches, while his combined 76 triumphs in league play still rank 12th on the conference’s all-time career list. After leaving USF following the 1994-1995 season, Brovelli was named Director of Player Development for the Denver Nuggets in 1996 and later that season assumed the role of an Assistant Coach. He later joined long-time friend Bernie Bickerstaff as an Assistant Coach on the Washington Wizards and was appointed the team’s interim Head Coach for the final 18 games of the 1999 season. He wrapped up his coaching career following a one-year (1999-2000) stint as Head Coach of the CBA’s Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Why Brovelli Chose USF:  "I  chose USF because I was searching for a more personal environment as opposed to the larger enrollment universities, and for the national recognition of the basketball program."

Favorite USF Moment: "My favorite memories as a basketball player are winning two WCC Championships and earning two berths into the NCAA Tournament."

The USF Student-Athlete Experience: "My student athlete experience could not have been any better. Not only did I make a lifetime family connection with my teammates, but I also played at a time when the student body became a big part of the success of the basketball program. Those relationships and an excellent Jesuit education were the ingredients that gave me the foundation for life after college."

Life After USF: Brovelli coached in the NBA as an Assistant Coach with the Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards. He is currently the radio analyst alongside Pat Olson on USF Dons Men’s Basketball radio broadcasts on KNBR 1050-am.
