Oscar Higuera was born on December 12, 1907 in Berkeley, and attended Berkeley High School. He attended the then Saint Ignatius College from 1929 to 1932, as it was transitioning to USF, and played four years of varsity football as a defensive tackle.
In 1930 he started for the first time in a night game against the San Diego Marines. He had spent the previous summer working on a road-building crew, and was in superb physical condition. Nearly every Foghorn article that season noted how well he played on the line. Discussing that loss at the Olympic Club on November 26, 1930, the Foghorn stated: “Oscar Higuera, who should next year be in line for an All-Coast nomination, played a great game at tackle. Higuera, by the way, is one of those football players who just plods along, doing their work as well as they know, which is pretty well enough, and seldom, if ever gets credit for it. Because he is a sophomore, Higuera is not getting much notice this year, but when the 1931 All-Coast nominations are drafted, we’ll wager Oscar is somewhere on that list.”
USF Head Football Coach Jimmy Needles, in a 1931 season outlook interview with the Foghorn, called Higuera one of the best tackles on the coast. The following year, he again served as the backbone of the varsity squad. As a result of his senior year performance, he was selected to the annual All-Star Game and received the Boyle Loyalty Award to honor his commitment.
Off the field, Higuera also enjoyed acting, and was cast in a number of major roles in several productions. He was a member of the Skull and Sledge, and was chosen president of the Block Club his senior year. Higuera was secretary of his senior class, and the 1933 Ignatian magazine called him one of the most popular men in the class. After USF, Oscar Higuera worked for the Borden Company.
