Serge Burenin was born on April 12, 1939 in Shanghai, China. The family emigrated to the Philippines from Tsingtao, China and were housed in a camp for Russian refugees. They later moved to the Bay Area, and he attended Aptos Junior High School and George Washington High School where he was an All-City Soccer player.

He attended USF on a soccer scholarship and was on the All-American Soccer Team in 1961. He was a three-time Letterman, an All-Time 1958 All-Conference Honorable Mention, a 1961 First Team All-Conference, and a 1961 Second Team All-American. He was coached by three previous USF soccer players: Bob Braghetta, Steve Negoesco, and Gus Donoghue.

After graduating in Business Administration, he worked in financial services at Merrill Lynch. He was drafted into the United States Army and was sent to Stuttgart, Germany to join the United States Army Soccer Team. He competed with them in the CISM Annual Competition, which consisted of two games each against Holland, France, Luxemburg and Austria. After discharge, he resumed his career at Merrill Lynch. After retiring, he settled in San Francisco, and was a lifelong Giants and soccer fan, and attended many World Cups worldwide. Joe Dugan, the men’s soccer radio analyst said of him: “He held the men’s soccer program in great regard and was one of the program’s biggest fans over the years. USF Soccer is better off because of Serge’s unwavering support (MSOC, USF).”
