Valerie Gillon was born on October 18, 1974 in Spa, Belgium. She was the first foreign player in USF Women’s Basketball history, and came to USF in 1992 as a sophomore transfer. She was quick and agile, and known for her tenacious defense. Valerie was the tallest player on the team and her presence had an immediate impact.

In her first year, Gillon averaged 15 MPG, and scored an average of 7.9 points (third on the team) and 4.5 rebounds (second on the team). She led USF with 53.3 field goal percentage and 23 blocks. Named the WCC’s Newcomer of the Year in 1994, Gillon also made the USF Athletic Department’s Honor Roll both semesters.

At the end of her junior year, Gillon was named to the All-WCC First Team after ranking in the top five of WCC statistics categories. She averaged 15.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and two blocks per game. She also led the conference at 52.5 FG%. She was key to USF’s 24-5 overall record, which included winning both the WCC regular season and the WCC Tournament.

In 1995 as a senior, Gillon led the Dons’ offensive attack by providing a balance of strength and finesse in the post. Known for her smile and fun-loving attitude, she led the team to an unprecedented three consecutive WCC Tournament appearances in the NCAA tournament, including reaching the Sweet 16 in 1996. She finished her USF career first in FG% (.554), first in blocks (139), with a scoring average of 13.7, and a rebound average of 7.5. The West Coast Conference has recognized her as one of the top 50 athletes in league history.
