(San Diego) - The University of San Francisco women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to San Diego Sunday in its first road contest of the 2011 West Coast Conference season. The Dons won the conference opener Friday against Loyola Marymount.
With the loss, the Dons fall to 4-9-0 overall, 1-1-0 in WCC action, while the Toreros improve to 6-7-0, 1-1-0 in league play.
"I am hugely disappointed in the result and performance today," said head coach Mark Carr. "We were outworked by a team who showed more effort, more hunger and more determination than us. San Diego clearly wanted to win today. We have to be prepared to go to work and compete to our maxium at every opportunity we can get. We need to execute better and play together. I am confident we will bounce back in the next day or so before we head to Gonzaga."
USF couldn't hold the surging Toreros, who were led by Elissa Magracia. Magracia scored two goals for USD, while taking four shots. Combined with the Toreros' other goal scorer, Stephanie Ochs, the duo accounted for all three goals, all but one assist and 11 of the 19 shots taken by San Diego
San Francisco fired just four shots for the afternoon
"We tried to play and compete, but we were all not completely fully invested in the game today," Carr said. "We all need to be full invested on the attacking and defensive ends of the ball. We will work on this."
USD got on the board in the first half at 24:13 with Magracia's first goal of the afternoon. She connected with a short pass from Megan O'Rouke at the end line, firing the ball into the lower right corner.
Magracia struck again in the second half at 59:41, as she nailed a rebounded shot originally taken by Ochos.
Ochos capped scoring at 71:12, connecting on a free kick from 20 yards out.
"There are a lot of games left to be played in the Conference, and I think there will be some more twists and turns," Carr added. "We need to be ready to take the next opportunity we are presented with and that's Gonzaga."
San Francisco will return to the pitch Thursday, when it travels to Spokane to face Gonzaga. The Dons and Zags will kick off at 3 p.m.
