(San Francisco) - The University of San Francisco women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision Sunday to Saint Mary's at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco. The game marked the final home game of the 2011 West Coast Conference season for the Dons.
With the loss, San Francisco falls to 5-13-0 overall, 2-6-0 in West Coast Conference action. Saint Marys, who improves 10-7-2 overall, garnered their first league win of the season to improve to 1-5-1 against WCC foes.
Saint Mary's broke the scoreless tie late in the first half at 39:36. The Gaels Jordan Marada fired a shot, it bounced off the cross bar and was rebounded by Sara Ives. Ives took the ball, passed it to Christina Tognetti, who fired the ball past a mass of Dons and into the left corner of the net.
The Dons best scoring chance came late in the second half. With just over 10 minutes remaining, San Francisco's Kelsey Moe fired a shot from the corner of the box, to the far left corner of the net. The Gaels' goalie made a diving stop to retain the lead for Saint Mary's.
The Gales controlled the match offensively, holding a 15-5 shot advantage. In the first half, Saint Mary's out shot San Francisco 10-2. San Francisco created more opportunities in the second half, but the Gaels' offense was still too much for it to handle.
The Dons will return to action Friday, as they travel to nationally-ranked No. 3 Pepperdine in Malibu. USF will return to the Hilltop, Sunday, Nov. 6 as the close out the 2011 season hosting Cal State Bakersfield. The match will serve as the annual Senior Day. Prior to the game the Green and Gold will honor their three Seniors – Meritt Peterson, Keonna Robinson and Joan Piasta.
