(Malibu, CA) – San Francisco opened the 2011-12 West Coast Conference campaign with a 71-59 loss at Pepperdine Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Dons (9-5, 0-1 WCC) drop their third straight to the Waves (7-5, 1-0 WCC) in Malibu.
San Francisco scored a season-low 61 points and did not shoot well, converting on just .377 (23-61) and were frigid from 3-point range, managing just .167 (4-24) from deep.
Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro led the Dons with a team-high 14 points, while junior forward Perris Blackwell added 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Michael Williams chipped in 11 points and senior forward Rashad Green scored 10.
USF was abused on the glass as the Waves owned a 41-29 rebound advantage, which offset 15 turnovers. The Dons dished out 11 assists and committed 10 miscues.
Pepperdine shot the ball extremely well in the opening period, converting on .593 (16-27) and made half of its six 3-point field goal attempts. The Dons were cold from the floor to start, connecting on just .367 (11-30) and went .111 (1-9) from long range. The Waves never trailed and closed the first 20 minutes on a 8-0 run for a 39-30 halftime advantage.
Caloiaro and Green led the way for the Dons with seven points apiece.
Corbin Moore scored a game-high 19 points with 12 rebounds to pace the Waves. Taylor Darby added 14 points, while Caleb Willis and Jordan Baker added 10 apiece.
USF plays its WCC home opener Saturday against Loyola Marymount in a 5:00 PM tip-off from War Memorial Gym on New Year's Eve. The contest will be carried live on 95.7 The GAME.
