SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – USF's men's golf team will open its 2013 spring season on Monday when the Dons join the 12-team field at The Farms Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of San Diego at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe.
Teams from UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, UC Irvine, Western Illinois, Fresno State, Missouri, Pacific, Loyola Marymount, UC Riverside and Saint Mary's will join the Dons and Toreros for the 54-hole event.
Teams will play 36-holes on Monday beginning at 8:15 a.m. and 18-holes on Tuesday starting at 8:00 a.m.
The Farms Golf Club will play to a par of 72 and at 6,947 yards for this event.
Head coach Rich Yokota is expected to start a lineup consisting of (in order) senior Taylor Travis, junior Cory McElyea, sophomore Emil Liljeroth, junior Alika Bell and senior Dash Lindsell.
Saint Mary's is the highest-rated team in the field, checking in at No. 29 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings, while San Diego and USF are ranked 60th and 61st, respectively.
Saint Mary's Ben Geyer (29th) and Travis (70th) are the highest ranked individual players in the field.
USF hopes the momentum built up over a successful fall season which saw the Dons post three top-five finishes hasn't been completely lost over the last four months.
“We had a solid fall,” said Yokota, who is in his fourth season as the Dons head coach. “It took us a while to gel but I thought we finished strong.”
Yokota points to the team's strong showing at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, the last event of the fall, where the Dons finished second to top-ranked California. Prior to the Alister Mackenzie event, USF placed third out in a field of 14 teams at the William Tucker Invitational at the University of New Mexico and fourth in a 12-team field at the Notre Dame Gridiron Classic.
Travis posted three top-five finishes during the fall, highlighted by a second place showing at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational where he finished three strokes back of medalist Brandon Hagy of California.
The 2011 WCC individual champion is threat to capture medalist honors in any event.
“Taylor has a very bright future ahead of him,” said Yokota. “He has few if any weaknesses and is a pure ball-striker.
