SAN FRANCISCO -- USF's women's golf team is hoping it has saved its best for last for the WCC Championships, which get underway on Monday in Bremerton, Wash.
The Dons will join Pepperdine, Gonzaga, BYU, Santa Clara and affiliate member Cal-State Bakersfield for the 54-hole event which will be held at the Gold Mountain Golf Club outside of Seattle.
USF does have history on its side. Since the WCC added women's golf as a championship sport in 1997, the Dons have finished no lower than second in the conference tournament, claiming titles in 1997 and '01.
Pepperdine, currently ranked 24th by Golfstat, has captured 11 straight conference championships, including last year when the Waves claimed a six-shot victory over USF at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in San Juan Bautista.
Gonzaga, led by defending WCC individual champion Victoria Fallgren and freshman Raychelle Santos, also figure to be in the title chase.
Grace Na of Pepperdine, ranked 10th nationally by GolfStat, is the highest-ranked player in the field. Na, a native of Alameda, won the 2011 individual conference title as freshman.
Head coach Sarah Glynn is expected to start a lineup consisting of freshman Emelie Lundstrom, senior Eyglo Oskarsdottir, juniors Peppiina Kaija and Victoria House along with sophomore Michelle Condry.
Oskarsdottir finished fifth last year with a 10-over score of 226 at San Juan Oaks. Condry also had a strong showing, tying for sixth at 227 (+11). Kaija finished 20th at 239.
Lundstrom, who is coming off a 10th place finish at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, and House, will be making their WCC Championship debuts.
The Dons are coming off their best performance of the spring, placing 10th at Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Honolulu. Lundstrom recorded her first top-10 finish of the year, finishing 10th with a seven-over score of 223 on rounds of 74-73-76.
The results in three spring tournaments prior to the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational left plenty of room for improvement, but Glynn know it only takes one tournament to turnaround a season.
“The great thing about golf you can forget everything you've done – good and bad – heading into the conference tournament. It's a clean slate.”
USF will be paired with Pepperdine and Gonzaga in the first round, which tees off at 8:00 a.m. on Monday.
“It's going to be important for us to get off to a good start. It will be good for our confidence if we are within striking distance after the first round. That made a huge difference last year when we were leading after one round.”
