SAN FRANCISCO—After an emotional Senior Day celebration before the match, the Dons wrapped up the season with a game to remember as the seniors took the lead in a 31-shot barrage against Pacific that resulted in a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"I'm very happy for the seniors today that they had a big, big impact on the game," San Francisco head coach
Jim Millinder said. "We finished the season on a high note. We scored seven goals in our last three conference games. In one of the most difficult conferences in the country, it's hard to score goals."
Â
San Francisco (7-10-3, 3-5-1 WCC) wrapped up the season by scoring seven times in the final three games, showing some of the potential of the team moving into next season. It is the second seven-win season under Millinder and only the third in the last 10 years.
Â
"The unfortunate thing is you have nine months before you get a crack at anybody," he said. "We're going to invest a lot of time in our games, individually and as a team, over the next nine months and try to make it better for next year.
Â
"We lost a lot of tight games and soccer is a cruel sport and we know that. I see the big picture and the big picture looks bright."
Â
It was the final game in Green and Gold for the team's four seniors,
Mackenzie Krieser,
Jaciara Mello,
Abigail Phillips and
Celia Pellegrini, and they each found a way to make an impact on the game.
Â
The Dons had scored off set pieces in each of the last two games and look primed to get another early on against Pacific. In the third minute, the Dons got a corner kick and it eventually ended up on the foot of
Jessica Nakae, who delivered it into the box where
Sonja Giraud rose to head the ball but her attempt went high.
Â
Giraud had another change in the sixth minute when she raced to beat her defender and met Pacific goalkeeper Melissa Ma at the top of the box but Ma was able to clear the ball.
Â
The Dons continued to keep the pressure on Pacific and got on the board when in the 17th minute
Allison Arriola was able to start a counter attack by delivering a pass that led a racing Krieser just outside of the box where she launched a ball over the outstretched arms of Ma for the score.
Â
It was the 20th goal of her career.
Â
San Francisco nearly tacked on another goal in the 26th minute when Phillips found some space from about five yards out and sent a bullet that went off the hands of Ma for the save.
Â
After a couple of substitutions in the 35th minute,
Alex Alugas streaked down the right sideline and dished a pass back towards the center of the box where
Camille Wilson was able to collect it and drill the ball past Ma to give the Dons a 2-0 lead. It was the first of her career.
Â
The Dons had 14 first half shots.
Â
"We did a good job possessing the ball," Millinder said. "I thought our spacing was excellent. We were very dangerous at trying to pick out our players in the box. I think all in all, we pinned them in."
Â
Pellegrini made her first start in goal on the season and went untested in the first half as Pacific had only one shot. Pellegrini reentered the game midway through the second half and picked up two saves, helping the Dons to their seventh shutout of the season.
Â
San Francisco continued the attack in the second half and had 17 shots in the final period and got back on the board in the 73rd minute when
Maddy Glaser took a free kick from about 30 yards and delivered it into the box where
Carissa Martine turned and fired it into the low right corner of the goal.
