Post Game Press Conference and Highlights HereSAN FRANCISCO -- USF shot a blistering 65 percent in the second half and pulled away from Houston Baptist to earn a 85-54 victory Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gymnasium.
Four Dons scored in double figures, led by freshman
Devin Watson, who came off the bench to score a game-high 14 points.
Mark Tollefsen and
Tim Derksen added 12 while
Kruize Pinkins chipped in with 11 for USF, which improved its record to 5-3 with the victory. A total of 12 USF players got into the scoring column.
Reveal Chuckwujekwu and Marcel Smith each scored 10 points for the visiting Huskies (3-3).
The Dons ended the game shooting 55 percent from the field while limiting the Huskies to just 31.4 percent. USF also made 8-of-14 of its three-point attempts, with Derksen, Watson and
Chris Adams knocking down two apiece.
USF used big runs at the end of the first half and the start of the second to seize control of the game. With the Huskies leading 20-19, USF used a 14-3 run over the final 3:28 of the first half to take a 33-23 lead into the break.Derksen and
Matt Glover keyed the run by scoring five points each, including a long three-pointer by Glover at the buzzer.
The Dons quickly increased their lead to 22 points with a 14-2 run to take a 47-25 lead less than four minutes into the second half.
All 14 of Watson's points came during a 12-minute stint in the second half, as the freshman from Oceanside made a pair of three-pointers and knocked down all eight of his free throw attempts en route to his career high.
Matt Christiansen drew his second start of the season in the middle and finished with seven points and five rebounds, sharing team high honors with Tollefsen. With 12 points, Tollefsen has now scored in double figures in all eight games this season.
USF will return to action Thursday night when the Dons play host to the Eastern Washington Eagles. Gametime is set for 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium.
