DAVIS, Calif.—Facing sweltering heat that hit triple digits, the Dons battled and got a late first half goal from
Maddy Glaser as they recorded their second straight road win by beating UC Davis 1-0 on Friday afternoon.
Â
"I think it shows the character of our team," San Francisco head coach
Jim Millinder said. "We've had some knocks but you still have to go and beat a team. You have to fight through a lot of different things and we did that tonight."
Â
The Dons (4-2-1) have rolled off two straight 1-0 road victories with the first coming last Sunday at defending Patriot League champion Boston University. It is also the second straight season that the Dons have beaten UC Davis by a 1-0 score.
Â
"We got the goal and managed the game," Millinder said. "It would have been nice to get a second goal, stretch it out at times."
Â
In what was a defensive battle in the first half,
Maddy Glaser was the one who broke through in the 34th minute when she took a free kick from about 10 yards out and bent it just past the hands of Aggie goalkeeper Taylor Jern to give the Dons a 1-0 lead.
Â
"She's a good player. She just needs more and more minutes and we're trying to get that for her," Millinder said. "What a great goal from a good angle."
Â
It was all the Dons needed by putting together another stellar defensive performance. USF goalkeeper
Madalyn Schiffel recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
Â
"Everyone is playing hard for each other," Millinder said. "It's worked so far. It's nice to get two clean sheets against two good opponents."
Â
After missing the first six matches of the season,
Mackenzie Krieser returned to the pitch and gave the Dons an immediate boost by playing 42 minutes and getting off two shots.
Â
"It's nice to see [Krieser] back on the park," Millinder said. "She looked good, got at people. Her instincts came back quickly and she created problems for them."
Â
The Dons will hit the pitch on Sunday when they play the opening of a double header with men's soccer against San Jose State at 12 p.m. The men's soccer team will play Central Arkansas at 3 p.m.
