CORVALLIS, Ore. - It was an old fashioned shootout in Corvallis, but the USF women's soccer team came up just short in a 2-1 overtime loss at Oregon State on Sunday afternoon. Just when it seemed like the contest was headed to a second overtime period, the Beavers' Natalie Higgins scored the game-winner with 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime frame.
Oregon State (3-0-0) went up early with a goal in the third minute as Mariah Roggow scored on a one-timer off a cross into the box.
That 1-0 Oregon State lead would last until the waning minutes of the second half, when USF's Sonja Giraud kept the Dons (2-1-1) afloat by tallying the equalizer in the 77th minute after she took a pass from Rochelle Weerackoon, slipped around a defender, and connected with a 25-yard bullet in the lower corner for her first goal of the season.
Both teams combined for a season-high 34 shots in the contest, with the Dons holding a 19-15 advantage in that department, including a decisive 13-4 edge in a wild second half that saw USF mount a furious offensive attack.
Giraud led the Dons with six shots, three of which were on goal, while Amanda Whittle fired off three shots of her own.
USF's Madalyn Schiffel (2-1-1) took the loss in goal for the Dons, but matched her season-high of six saves, which she also had in Friday's win at Oregon. Schiffel's four-match scoreless streak, which stretched back to the final match of 2014, was snapped.
Bella Geist (3-0-0) tallied five saves in the victory for OSU.
USF returns home on Friday, Sept. 4 to host Denver at 4:30 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium.
