USF Comeback Thwarted by Lions

LOS ANGELES – A flurry of early goals set the tone as the San Francisco women's soccer team fell short in the comeback bid against Loyola Marymount in a 3-2 loss on Friday night at Sullivan Field.
USF slips to 6-9-0 overall, and sports a 2-3-0 West Coast Conference record. With the win, the Lions improve to 10-3-3 on the season and 5-1-0 in league action, just a half game out of the top spot currently occupied by USF's next opponent, Pepperdine.
"LMU is having an outstanding year," noted USF head coach Jim Millinder prior to the trip to L.A. "They are tough, organized and very good in many facets of the game."
The WCC's second-place squad netted the first goal of the night just three minutes into the match after Jill Farley's shot sailed past Makayla Presgrave to give the Lions the lead. The answer was quick, however, after a USF counterattack resulted in the score for Sonja Giraud in the 10th minute.
Loyola Marymount picked up another first half goal in the 24th minute and widened the gap midway through the second half after earning the eventual game winner. Just over five minutes later, USF freshman Izzie Lueken one-timed it into the far net for her first collegiate goal to pull the Dons back into the mix.
The Dons had a late shot to knot the match in the 84th minute, but Jessica Nakae's attempt was saved by Charlee Pruitt as the Lions fended off USF's rally.
Next up, the Dons take on the No. 19 Waves from Malibu on Sunday at 11 a.m.
