USF's women's golf team opens its spring season this weekend at the Peg Barnard Invitational, which will be contested on Saturday and Sunday at Stanford Golf Club.
The 36-hole event features teams from California, Colorado, Denver, Fresno State, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, San Jose State, UC Davis, Washington along with USF and host Stanford. Seven of the 13 teams in the field are ranked in the top-50 in the latest Golfstat rankings, including top-20 squads Stanford (6), Washington (14) and California (20). Colorado (37), Oregon (40), USF (44) and UC Davis (47) are also ranked within the top-50, according to Golfstat.
The field will tee off at 8:00 a.m. each day from holes 1 and 10 in 11-minute intervals.
The Dons are expected to start a lineup consisting of Emelie Lundstrom, Clare Sorensen, Vanessa Ha, Ayaka Suzuki and Alison Lillie, who will be making her first start of the season.
"Our qualifying rounds have been as competitive as they have been in years," said head coach Sarah Glynn. "The team returned from break sharp and energized."
USF's strong fall season yielded top-five finishes in all four events, including a win at the Rose City Intercollegiate that helped vault the Dons into the 44th position in the latest Golfstat rankings. Ha, Lundstrom and Suzuki combined for six individual top-10s, highlighted by Ha's win at Rose City.
Glynn knows the importance of getting the spring off on the right foot if the team is to continue to build its case for an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals in May.
"Our goal throughout the spring will be to stay in the present and stick to our process," said USF head coach Sarah Glynn. "What we can do today will make us better tomorrow. We can't control our ranking or whether we win a tournament against 13 other opponents, but we can control our emotions, our preparation, our game plan and course management, all of which will determine how we play as a team."
Oregon rallied to capture last year's event with a winning score of 576 (+8) while USF placed 10th in the 12-team field with a score of 607 (+39). Paige Lee of UC Davis claimed medalist honors with a score of 132 (66-66). Ha, who tied for 22nd place with a 7-over score of 149, was USF's top individual finisher.
USF will return to action on March 7-8 when the Dons host the Bay Area Intercollegiate at the Meadow Club in Fairfax. The schedule continues with stops at the BYU Entrada Classic (March 14-15), Sacramento State Invitational (March 21-22), Silverado Showdown (April 3-5) and culminates at the WCC Championships at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, April 18-20.
