USF's women's golf team enters the Silverado Showdown with a heavy dose of momentum after its win at the Sacramento State Invitational a few weeks ago in Roseville. However, the stakes have been raised as the Dons join one of strongest fields of the spring starting Sunday in Napa.
Nine of the top-50 teams in the nation headline the 18-team field that will compete on Silverado's recently renovated North Course, which will play to 6,206 yards and a par of 72 for this event. Teams will tee off from the first and 10th tees on Sunday and Monday beginning at 7:45 a.m. while Tuesday's round will feature a shotgun start beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Joining USF in the field are top-50 teams from Stanford, currently ranked 11th by Golfstat, San Diego State (17), California (15), Oregon (23), Louisville (36), Colorado (40), New Mexico (43), Ohio State (44) and LSU (50), along with squads from San Jose State, Pepperdine, Minnesota, Long Beach State, Gonzaga, Wisconsin, UC Davis and Nebraska.
Currently ranked 52nd by Golfstat after its win at the Sacramento State Invitational, the Dons know a solid showing against a strong field will help their chances of securing at at-large bid into the NCAA Regionals. The West Coast Conference no longer has an automatic berth due to the fact only five schools field women's golf teams.
"Our goal back in August was to make NCAA Regionals and at this point of the season we control our own destiny to play our way into postseason," said USF assistant coach Jack Kennedy. "Our team is very excited to have the opportunity to prove they belong among some of the top teams in the nation."
Washington won the inaugural Silverado Cup in 2014 with a 3-under par score of 861, while Oregon captured last year's event with a 25-over score of 889. Cal's Lucia Gutierrez of Cal claimed medalist honors last year with a 4-under score of 212. Silverado North will again provide a strong test for some of the nation's top players.
"The course will not relinquish many low scores," said Kennedy. "We must stay patient and play with confidence to achieve the finish we're capable of."
The Dons are expected to start a lineup consisting of (in order) Vanessa Ha, Ayaka Suzuki, Alison Lillie, Clare Sorensen and Emelie Lundstrom. Ha is coming off her second win of the season at the Sacramento State Invitational and is making a strong case for WCC Player of the Year honors. The Silverado Showdown also marks the last regular season tournament for Sorensen and Lundstrom prior to the WCC Championships, which will be held April 18-20 at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville.
"We want to ensure this will not be the end of their careers rather than the beginning of a magical run through the postseason," said Kennedy.
