THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team needed just nine shots to get the result it needed, as the Dons defeated visiting BYU 2-1 on Thursday evening at Negoesco Stadium.
Â
USF (7-10-2/3-5-0 WCC) lit up the scoreboard first when
Izzie Lueken took a pass from
Samantha Jehnings and was left wide open in the box for her second goal of the season. That score by Lueken came in just the fourth minute of the contest.
Â
The Dons figured it might be their night early when BYU (7-7-4/4-3-1 WCC) missed a penalty kick wide right in the second minute of the game. The Cougars did manage to tie the match at the 25
th minute on a goal by Cameron Tucker, she grabbed a rebound on a shot by Madie Siddoway that keeper
Olivia Camera could not coral for her fourth of the year.
Â
The game remained tied until the 68
th minute when
Desiree Major took a free kick on the far side of the field and beat the keeper to the inside post from 35 yards out. The strike by Major was her second of the year, and first game winning goal of her career.
Â
The Dons' defense and Camera did their part, keeping BYU off the scoreboard the remainder of the game. Camera registered 12 saves on the evening, one shy of her season high at Stanford earlier this season. BYU tallied 23 shots on the evening, but only 13 were on goal as USF's defense did a good job of mitigating good looks at the net.
