SAN FRANCISCO – A 6-for-33 performance from 3-point range, and a 15-3 run late in the second half by the visiting Gauchos proved to be the difference as the University of San Francisco men's basketball team fell to UCSB 79-72 on Tuesday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Tuesday's contest was the tightest the Dons (3-2) had participated in all season, with the game tied 41-41 at the half and not decided until the very closing minutes, with the two teams battling it out through six ties and 13 lead changes over the course of 40 minutes. In the end, the Dons offense couldn't get the big bucket it needed, while UC Santa Barbara (5-2) did just enough offensively to put the Dons away.
USF had two players in double figures, with senior
Chase Foster and freshman
Souley Boum both finishing with 17. Foster the more traditional way, going 6-for-13 from the field and 3-for-7 from 3-point range. Boum was just 2-for-7 from the floor, but was absolutely money from the charity stripe, going 12-for-14.
The Dons' inside game provided a bulk of the offense, USF was credited with 26 points in the paint, but when shooting from inside the arc, the Dons connected on 55 percent of their baskets, going 18-for-29.
Matt McCarthy had his best evening of the season, he scored a season-high eight points, while grabbing six rebounds, he also had two assists.
With 6:29 in the contest UCSB's Marcus Jackson hit a three to put the Gauchos out front 65-64, a lead they never relinquished. Boum hit a three with less than a minute remaining to cut the deficit to 72-69, but USF could not complete the comeback.
UCSB had five players in double figures and was led by Leland King II who had 21 points.
GAME NOTES
- The Dons entered tonight 14-4 all-time against the Gauchos at home, but have now lost two-straight home contests against UCSB.The last time these two teams played at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, UCSB came out on top, 68-61 on Nov. 25, 2015.
- USF continues its strong team rebounding.USF outrebounded the Gauchos 39-35, with nine players grabbing at least one rebound, four players grabbed six or more and was led by Chase Foster's team-high seven rebounds.
- Boum continues to shine at the line, he entered tonight the leader in the WCC in free throw percentage, connecting on 21 of his first 23 attempts.Against UCSB he went 12-for-14 from the free throw line, he's now 33-for-37 from the charity stripe to begin his career.
- USF opened the game 4-for-16 from 3-point range, in the second half they shot 2-for-17 for a season-low 18.2 percent from long range.
- The Dons utilized 11 players this evening, with 10 of them playing 10 or more minutes, Foster led the way with a season-high 33 minutes played.
- USF's bench was once again fantastic, scoring 42 points.That makes five consecutive games where the bench has scored 26 or more, and four of the first five games with the Don's bench scoring 38 or more.Tonight, USF's reserves outscored UCSB's reserves 42-5.

The Dons will have two firsts in their next contest, the game against Arizona State on Dec. 2 will be their first road game of the season, and first game played on Saturday. The game, which will be televised on Pac-12 Network will tip off at 6:00 p.m. PST.
