SAN FRANCISCO – On a night when four exceptional athletes were being honored on Senior Night, it was a senior who broke a scoreless tie just before half. With the momentum, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team ended the season on a high-note, defeating San Diego 2-0 at Negoesco Stadium on Saturday evening.
On a bitterly cold evening, USF (8-10-2, 4-5-0 WCC) and San Diego (8-11-0, 6-3 WCC) were embroiled in a lethargic opening half, with neither side taking control of the game. That changed on a flash with 11 seconds remaining in the period when senior forward
Sonja Giraud deflected a kick from the Toreros' keeper that bounced in for the game's opening score.
The goal was the eighth of the season for Giraud, and the 21
st of her career, giving her sole possession of sixth all-time at USF.
The first half featured just seven shots total, four coming from the home team. Coming out of the intermission, USF increased its offensive intensity and outshot USD 7-4 in the second period, while maintaining possession on the Toreros half of the field.
In the 81
st minute sophomore
Miciah Madison took a pass from Giraud in the middle of the box and beat the keeper to the lower left corner of the goal. For Madison, it was her fifth goal of the season, and put the game on ice as the Dons played keep-away for the final nine minutes.
Defensively, the Dons were stellar. USF's defenders held USD to seven shots on the evening. Keeper
Olivia Camera earned the clean sheet, while tallying three saves on the evening.
