HIGHLIGHTS AND LISTEN TO COACH MILLINDER
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco (2-1-1) women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Cal Poly (1-2-1) in double overtime on Saturday, finishing the weekend undefeated.
Down 2-1 late in the game, Samantha Jehnings got the equalizer on a free kick goal from 30-yards out in the 87th minute. Kicking from the far-left side, Jehnings' free kick sailed over several players trying to head the ball and found the back of the net in the far post. It was Jehnings second goal of the season
"It was a tough match. When Cal Poly scored with seven minutes left, we rose to the occasion," said Dons head coach Jim Millinder. "We found some form about midway through the second half and we were all over them. We were peppering them, we were combining and we were shooting. We just couldn't stick the ball into the net. But good teams find a way to get the ball into the net."
Jehnings' goal came minutes after Cal Poly took the lead, 2-1, on Megan Abutin's left foot shot just inside the box in the 83rd minute. It was Abutin's second goal of the match, having scored in the ninth minute on a direct goal on a corner kick that the Dons defense could not clear which tied the game at 1-1.
The Dons opened the scoring early when Sonja Giraud scored just three minutes into the match. Giraud picked up the loose ball at the top of the 18 and slotted the ball to the lower left corner of the frame for her second goal of the season.
"We jumped on them quickly and then we went through a spell where we were complacent. You can't be a complacent team when you're up a goal. I think on the day, it was probably a fair result. Olivia Camera was big time in the goal again today. She made three or four huge saves for us," said Millinder.
Camera was credited with 10 saves, matching her career-high.
For the game, the Dons outshot the Mustangs 18-to-14. Ten of USF's shots were on frame as were 12 of Cal Poly's shots.
The Dons will hit the road next and play at UC David on Friday, September 1.
