Dons Fall in Double Overtime

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. – University of San Francisco out shot UC Davis 21-to-10 including 10-to-4 shots on goal but it was UC Davis who made their shots count as the Dons lost 2-1 in double overtime on Friday morning.

USF dropped its record to 2-2-1 while UC Davis (1-4-0) picked up its first win of the season.

"It's a disappointing loss.  We just weren't as good as we needed to be.  I didn't think we played our best soccer in the first 45 minutes," said Dons head coach Jim Millinder.

At intermission, the game remained scoreless with USF holding an edge in shots, 4-to-3, while the Aggies had six corner kicks to none for the Dons.

In the second half, USF out shot the Aggies 14-to-3.

"We pelted them in the second half.  There was more energy and we had numerous chances to go up.  We probably had five or six good looks," said Millinder.  "But you have to cash in on the chances.  We out shot them.  Everyone is good on the road so we have to play a complete 90 minutes, not just one good half."

UC Davis scored the first goal of the match in the 50th minute when Mahlah Catline back heeled the long free kick from Mandy McKeegan.

The Dons answered back in the 69th minute on Sonja Giraud's third goal of the season.  Giraud took the short pass from Samantha Jehnings and found the back of the net when she ripped a shot with her left foot at the top of the box.

The game remained tied in regulation and into double overtime until McKeegan struck again.  In the 104th minute, McKeegan tucked the ball inside the left post off a free kick that tipped off Dons goalkeeper Olivia Camera's hands.

With the excessive heat warning in effect around central valley, the kickoff was moved up to 10 a.m. PT.  And even with the early start, the game time temperature hovered in the 90s.

USF plays its next game back home at Negoesco Stadium on Sunday, September against Pac-12 foe, Oregon State.  Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT on Emergency Workers Day.
