Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB | Heartbreak in Provo as the Dons Fall to BYU in Overtime

PROVO, Utah – With :39 seconds in the end of regulation Souley Boum hit a pair of free throws to give the University of San Francisco men's basketball team a 63-57 lead.  Unfortunately for the Dons, BYU's Elijah Bryant hit a 3-point field goal with four seconds remaining to send the game into overtime, from there the Cougars held on to send the Dons home with a 75-73 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center.

USF (14-13, 6-8 WCC) played tremendous defense all afternoon, forcing BYU (20-7, 9-5 WCC) into 19 turnovers.  The Dons turned those 19 turnovers into 28 points.  USF held BYU without a field goal over seven minutes down the stretch, the Cougars got a bulk of their offense at the free throw line where they finished the game 18-for-23, 12-for-17 in the second half.

Ultimately, the trio of Bryant, Yoeli Childs and TJ Haws proved to be too much.  All three combined to score 60 of BYU's 75 points.   Haws finished with a game-high 26, Childs added 10.  Bryant finished with a double-double scoring 14 and grabbing 11 rebounds.

USF had balance throughout the lineup, with nine players scoring a bucket, but needed one more scorer besides Boum and Frankie Ferrari.  Boum finished with a team-high 21 points, going 7-for-12 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the free throw line.  The seven free throws give him 98 for the season, a new single-season record by a freshman.

Ferrari scored 16, going 5-for-11 from the field, he was also 3-for-6 from the 3-point range.  Remu Raitanen and Nate Renfo both finished with nine points each.  In the trenches, USF was led by Jimbo Lull's seven rebounds.
