SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's golf team looks to continue its strong momentum this week when it travels to the state's capitol to participate in the Sacramento State Invitational hosted by Sacramento State at the par-72, 6,133-yard Sierra View Country Club.
COACH'S MINUTE
The Dons have cracked the top-100 in the Golfstat rankings following their second-place finish at the Meadow Club Invitational two weeks ago. The Dons finished ahead of three ranked teams in that tournament.
On Monday the Dons will take on a seven team field that includes Cal State Bakersfield (195), Cal State Fullerton (144), Cal State Northridge (163), Nevada (130), Northern Colorado (148), Sacramento State (59), and Towson (136), plus 13 individuals.
The Dons have had success at this tournament, winning in 2016 when USF recorded a team score of 889 (296-298-295). Senior Vanessa Ha led the Dons and was the individual champion that tournament, shooting a three-round score of 220.
Head coach Sara Doell is going with a familiar lineup: seniors Vanessa Ha, Kimberly Liu, and Emily Laskin. Joining the trio will be Samantha Gong and Joan Soewondo, as well as Pearl Rojanapeansatith, and Carley Hopton as individuals.
Gong is on fire for the Dons, the sophomore was the individual champion at the Meadow Club Invitational, her first collegiate induvial championship. She entered the final round tied for eighth but vaulted up the leader board after firing a 4-under 68, the second lowest round by anyone in the tournament. She began the day even on the front nine with a pair of birdies and two bogies. On the back-9 she was lights out, finishing with five birdies after the turn, including the first three holes.
Ha leads the team with an average round score of 73.9 which puts her in the top-200 individually. She's posted six rounds where she's finished in the top-20 including three top-10 finishes.
