BSB | Dons Stay in the Win Column Against Portland

THE RUNDOWN
PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of San Francisco baseball team defeated Portland, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon. In game two of the three-game series, the Dons (14-8, 5-0) beat the Pilots (8-14, 2-3), bringing the count to 2-0 with a Sunday game remaining.

The win today seals the season series for the Dons who have now taken down the Pilots in the past four series. The Dons are now the single unbeaten team (conference games only) amongst the West Coast Conference.

USF wasted no time as they earned four runs over eight batters in the first inning. Jonathan Allen and Riley Helland were top of the order, both recording doubles to start the Dons off 1-0. Helland, Michael Perri and Ross Puskarich each scored to stretch the lead to 4-0 before the Pilots even went to bat.

Perri brought the Dons to a 5-0 lead on an unearned run in the top of the third. It took the Pilots two innings to settle in, but when they finally did in the third, they cut the lead to two after a three-score against Riley Ornido.

Both teams were pretty quiet until the top of the seventh when Jonathan Allen stepped up for the Dons with a home run to right-center field. Portland managed to score one more run in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't rally in the ninth, helping USF's Scott Parker to his first save of the year.

COACH'S QUOTES
"I'm really pleased with how we put up early runs in the game, back-to-back doubles from Allen and Helland was huge for us. Then we put an extra run in the third. It was another battle, but we played well.

"Ornido struggled a bit...gave up three runs, walked two, then a guy hit a triple down the line from him...but then he went five innings after that with a great performance. He truly battled back. Anytime your starter does that you have a chance to be successful. Then we had Scotty Parker who was fabulous.

"We also had a big home run by Allen, which we were happy with. Now we have a chance tomorrow to play another good game."
