BSB | Walks Hurt Dons Against Kansas State in Game One

The Rundown
SAN FRANCISCO - The University of San Francisco Dons baseball's (27-27) dropped a close one in the first of a three-game series against Kansas State (22-30), 4-2.

In the first inning, Kansas State would get on the score board. A one-out double from Hanz Harker followed by a walk would put runners on first and second for the Wildcats. The next batter would hit a ground ball to first base, but the ball would clip off the glove of Jason Kreske, allowing the runner to come around and score from second to make it 1-0, KSU after one.

The Dons would even the score in the bottom of the third inning with a lead-off home run from Nick Yovetich. On the first pitch of the inning, the freshman would launch a high fly ball into right field that would get over the home run line and off the netting to make it 1-1.

The Wildcats would regain the lead in the next half inning with back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Alex Pham would come in for Haydn King and get an out on a fielder's choice but allowing the runner from third to come into score. A ground ball to Jack Winkler at third would look to end the inning with a double play, but catcher's interference would allow all the runners to reach safely and load the bases again. Pham would walk the next batter, bringing in the runner in from third to make it 3-1, Kansas State.

USF would cut the Wildcats lead to one run in the fifth inning. The inning would get started with a single to center field from Yovetich, followed by a double off the left field wall by Aaron Ping, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Jonathan Allen would fly out to the warning track of left field, allowing Yovetich to score from third to make it 3-2 after five innings.

Kansas State would add an insurance run in the sixth inning to push their lead back up to two runs. With two-outs and runners on first and second, Pham would face his last batter of the afternoon, walking the bases loaded. Grant Young would come on and walk the first batter he'd face to bring in the runner from third, making it 4-2.

The score would remain 4-2, although the Dons would threaten in eighth as they got runners to first and second with two-outs, but Kansas State would get the final out of the inning.

The Dons are now 27-27 on the year and will look to even up the series tomorrow in game two against Kansas State. Riley Ornido will take to the mound with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
