Early Goals Secure Season Opening Win For the Dons

MISSOULA, Mont. – A pair of goals in less than two minutes by Samantha Jehnings was the difference as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team defeated Drake 2-1 in the 2018 season opener.

The Dons (1-0-0) battled through the altitude and maintained the pressure on the Bulldogs (0-1-1) all afternoon.  USF finished the afternoon with 18 shots, with seven on goal.  Miciah Madison finished the day with a game-high four shots one on goal.  Izzie Lueken, Autumn Smithers and Karley Weeks had three shots apiece.

USF did not have to wait long to light up the scoreboard – just 48 seconds, one of the fastest goals in program history and the fastest goal in an opener in the last 10 years.  Jehnings scored on a header from a cross by Lueken to put the Dons out front 1-0.  Jehnings didn't waste time notching her second goal of the season, scoring from 20 yards out on the left side one minute and eight seconds later.

Drake pulled within one at the six minute mark, when Alison Walls scored on an unassisted goal from eight yards out.  The goal was USF's lone blemish on defense, as they held Drake to just six shots on the day and only the one shot on goal.

Olivia Camera earned the win for the Dons.  USF's bench was very active with 20 players seeing action, only three players played the full 90 minutes.  Nine freshmen made their USF debut.

COACH'S QUOTE
"A good result for us, any time you go out on the road and win it's a good thing -- especially in the season opener," said head coach Jim Millinder.  "The park over here is a lot different than what we are used too and it's a good thing for us to get used to.  Overall the team did really well, we created a lot of chances.  I thought Sam was outstanding, Miciah Madison was very good for us.  We got some really good play from our freshmen, Kalena Teufel and Bethan Parry were outstanding. We've got a lot of work to do still but anytime you get a win at the Division I it's a good thing."

GAME NOTES
  • The two goals by Samantha Jehnings gives her 15 for her career, moving her into sole possession of 11th place all time.
  • Jehnings loves season openers, she scored USF's first goal of the season last year in the 12th minute against New Mexico.
  • The two goals in under two minutes by Jehnings is a program record for goals scored by one player that quickly.  Her goal with 48 seconds is believed to be the quickest goal scored in a season opener in program history.
  • With the win the Dons improve to 4-1-2 under head coach Jim Millinder in season openers.

UP NEXT
The Dons will return to action on Sunday morning when they take on host Montana at 11:30 a.m. PST.  The game was moved to help the Dons travel schedule.
