Jehnings Strikes Twice Again, Dons Dominate Grizzlies

MISSOULA, Mont. – For the second-straight contest, redshirt junior Samantha Jehnings found the back of the net twice and the University of San Francisco women's soccer team dominated host Montana 2-0 to wrap up the weekend undefeated in Missoula.

Defensively, USF (2-0-0) kept Montana (0-2-0) in check most of the contest, limiting the Grizzlies to just eight shots, with two on goal.  USF's defense made easy work for redshirt freshman Molly Eby, who earned a clean sheet in her first career start in goal for the Dons.  Eby (1-0) recorded one save that came in the sixth minute and was otherwise mostly unchallenged.

With the defense putting the clamps down on the Grizzlies attack, Jehnings and the USF attack went to work.  Miciah Madison's speed and athleticism proved to be too much for Montana's back row to contain.  After several nice runs into the heart of the UM defense, she eventually broke through and sent a pass to Jehnings who was all alone in the left side of the penalty box in the 19th minute for the first goal of the game.

Three minutes later it was Jehnings again, this time beating the keeper with a header off the picture perfect feed from Izzie Lueken.  Lueken came away with two assists on the weekend.  USF wrapped up the first half with six shots, three on goal.

In the second period the Dons' offense slowed down, seemingly content to sit on its lead.  USF managed just three shots in the second period, two on target with the best chance coming in the 89th minute by Samantha Curwood-Wagner that was saved by UM's keeper Claire Howard.

COACH'S QUOTE
"A real good result once again for us on the road," said head coach Jim Millinder.  "Today's result was more than just Sam's two goals, there were a lot of contributions up and down the lineup.  Miciah and Izzie were terrific.  Molly Eby got her first career clean sheet in her first career start.  But the contributions came from everywhere – at one point I had eight freshmen on the field.  So, a great win but we need to get better; we've got a big test next weekend against the defending National Champions.  But I'm very pleased to be starting the year 2-0 with two good road wins."

GAME NOTES
  • With the win, the Dons begin the season 2-0 on the road for the first time since 2003, when USF defeated Rice and Boise State in Eugene, Ore.
  • Samantha Jehnings' two goals gives her 17 for her career which is tied for ninth all-time at USF with Pam Riggs (1989-92).
  • In her first two seasons, forward Izzie Lueken went without an assist – she has recorded an assist in back-to-back games to begin this season.
  • Autumn Smithers and Catherine Hill were the only position players to play a full 90 minutes again today.  USF had 13 players play at least 40 minutes this afternoon, 21 players overall saw at least 20 minutes of action.
