WSOC | Marlow Golden As Dons Defeat Toreros

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco earned their second consecutive overtime win when Marie Marlow took a free kick from Samantha Jehnings and blasted it to the back of the net in the 108th minute as the Dons (10-4-2/3-1-1 WCC) defeated visiting San Diego (6-7-1/2-3-0 WCC) 2-1 in the second overtime on Wednesday night at Negoesco Stadium.

"Our kids just battled, we gave up an early goal to a very good player from USD.  We weren't as sharp as we needed to be in the first half," said head coach Jim Millinder. "We shook things up in the second half, we pressed them.  When we got the first goal, to be honest, I thought we'd win the game.  Samantha had a terrific night for us.  She scored the first goal for us and really gave us a lot of momentum, then she put a terrific pass on the goal by Marie.  I thought everybody played well and our effort was off the charts.  You don't like to go down a goal but it's your character that brings you back and our team has great character and they willed us back.  It was a great win for us, we got to keep winning one game at a time."

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After two great looks at the net by the Dons, it was the Toreros who scored first when Milan Moses corralled a pass in the box and sent the ball past a diving Olivia Camera (10-4-2) for the first score of the game.

• USF went into the locker room trailing 1-0, however, the Dons actually outshot USD in the opening half – 7-3 with a 4-2 shots on goal advantage.  Both Samantha Jehnings and Miciah Madison had great looks on goal but stellar goal play by USD's Amber Michel tallied four saves and kept the Dons off the scoreboard.

• Early in the second half, the Toreros were poised to take a two goal lead when a through pass had an open net for USD, but at the last second Camera dove in front of the ball and knocked it away for the save of her career. It was the her fourth save of the contest.  From then on the Dons' defense was relentless keeping the Toreros offense in check for the remainder of the contest.
• Finally, in the 80th minute, the Dons got the equalizer when Samantha Jehnings found a loose ball at her feet and chipped it past the Torero keeper for her ninth goal of the season and 33rd in her career. That's where the score remained for the final 10 minutes sending USF into overtime.

• Through almost two full overtimes, the Dons eventually got the goal they needed when Marie Marlow scored her second goal in as many games – this time a golden goal off the free kick by Jehnings to send the Dons home winners.
