WSOC | Dons Hang Tough But Fall to No. 5 USC

HONOLULU – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team got a huge early test, battling on No. 5 USC to begin the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff hosted by Hawaii on Saturday afternoon.  The Dons got a tremendous performance from senior keeper Olivia Camera who finished the day with 10 saves, but the Trojans got the win thanks to a pair of second half goals, winning 2-0.

"At the end of the day our kids battled, they worked their tails off," said eighth year head coach Jim Millinder.  "That being said, we made some costly mistakes and an outstanding team like USC was able to take advantage. We had some good looks, we hit the crossbar but at the end of the day it's good to feel disappointed.  We have a lot of soccer ahead of us starting with Hawaii on Monday and we really need to get a result."

HOW IT HAPPENED

• In the opening half, the two sides battled to a 0-0 draw.  USC had the advantage on the attack, outshooting the Dons 9-1 in the first period – five of those shots coming on goal.  USF's lone shot attempt in the first half came on a quick counter by the Dons and was taken by midfielder Izzie Lueken.

• A USF penalty in the box led to the Trojans first goal of the contest.  USC's Natalie Jacobs sent the ball past Camera in the 55th minute.  USC added a second goal in the 83rd minute when Tara McKeown took a feed from Penelope Hocking and sent the ball to the back of the Dons' net.

• USF finished the night with four shots, three coming on goal.  Senior forward Miciah Madison led the Dons with two shots on goal for the evening.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
10:  Camera's 10 saves are the most since she finished with 12 against BYU on Nov. 2, 2017.  It is the fifth time in career she has tallied 10 or more saves in a single match.
