HONOLULU – After an eventful second half the University of San Francisco women's soccer team got the result it was looking for thanks to a golden goal by senior
Miciah Madison in the 94
th minute of the Dons' 3-2 win over host Hawaii. USF (1-1-0) finished the night with 13 shots, 11 of them on goal. Eight of them coming after the intermission. Hawaii (0-2-0) finished the evening with nine shots, seven on goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two sides went into the intermission tied at 0-0. USF applied plenty of offensive pressure early but could not find the back of the net. Senior keeper
Olivia Camera (1-1-0) finished with two of her five saves to keep the Wahine off the scoreboard.
• It was senior forward
Samantha Jehnings who got the Dons on the board first, scoring a pair of goals a little over two minutes apart. Jehnings found the back of the net for the first time in the 63
rd minute of the contest. Two minutes and 32 seconds later Jehnings had the Dons up 2-0 after scoring her second goal on a penalty kick.
• USF's 2-0 advantage did not last long. Hawaii scored their first goal of the night in the 67
th minute when Michaela Rentner took a pass from Isabel Deutsch beating Camera. Twelve minutes later Hawaii tied it up on the equalizer by Natalie Daub.
• The Dons' defense preserved the 2-2 draw with Camera picking up three more saves. Early in overtime Madison did not waste time, taking a shot that hit the cross bar with 92:58 on the clock. Eleven seconds later Madison sealed the win taking a pass from
Sydney Cooper for the goal and ripped one from 30 yards out.
"It's a great result for us, not happy that we were up two goals to none and they equalized but our kids stayed with it and got the result," said head coach
Jim Millinder. "We didn't manage the game as well as we should have but I'm very pleased with our effort overall.
Halle Watson made her first career start for us and was outstanding in the back. Miciah was big time on the night and Samantha was terrific, I've never seen her work harder. Overall, Hawaii is an extremely hardworking team and we feel fortunate to get out of here with a win and now it's time to turn our attention to San Diego State."
