WSOC | Dons Battle Their Way to 1-0 Win Against Montana

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO – In a tight 90 minute affair, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team battled it out to a 1-0 win over visiting Montana (1-4-3) on Friday night at Negoesco Stadium.

Mia Villegas scored the Dons (6-3-0) only goal of the night 45 seconds before halftime. It was a defensive battle as neither team attempted many shots.  USF ultimately outshot the Grizzlies 10-5.  In the second half, the Dons tallied just four shots to Montana's two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Dons had the early momentum with a pair of shots on goal that needed incredible saves by Montana's keeper Claire Howard (1-4-3) to keep ball from finding the back of the net.  The two sides settled into an uneventful first half with USF outshooting the Grizzlies 6-3.

• USF finally broke the scoreless tie 45 seconds before halftime when Villegas banged home a goal off the beautiful corner kick by Izzie Lueken.  The header by Villegas was the first goal of her career. For Lueken it was her first assist of the season.

• The second half followed the same script as the first with the Dons getting a few looks on goal early but were unable to score.  USF outshot Montana 4-1 through the first 35 minutes with Montana dropping back everyone on defense.

• Olivia Camera (6-3-0) earned the win for the Dons, she kept the Grizzlies off the scoreboard for her fourth shutout of the year. She also notched two saves giving her 40 for the season.
