WGOLF | Hungry Dons Return to Ptarmigan Ram Classic
9/22/2019 11:15:00 AM | Women's Golf
The University of San Francisco women's golf team is back in action this week, this time traveling to Fort Collins, Colo., where they will participate in a tournament and golf course they are very familiar with, the Ptarmigan Ram Classic hosted by Colorado State at the Ptarmigan Country Club.
"What a great two first tournaments we have played," said head coach Sara Doell. "The team's spirits are really high right now, last week we competed in our own Solheim Cup the last two days. On top of that we fortunate enough to meet President Barack Obama at The Olympic Club which was thrilling! But now it's back to work and we turn our attention to the Ram Classic which is located at one of our favorite golf courses. The par fives are reachable and scoreable and that is typically one of the strongest parts of our game. I am excited to see the team continue down the path of success that they have started this fall!"

The Course
The Par-72, 6,466 yard, Ptarmigan Country Club golf course was designed in 1979 by the legendary Jack Nicklaus to accent the dramatic vista of the Rocky Mountains. This signature course offers golfers of all skill levels a variety of challenges in its several hundred acres of terrain, featuring 97 sand traps, lush bent-grass greens, four different tee boxes on every hole, rolling topography, and 100 feet of elevation change from south to north.
The Field (13)
Joining the Dons this week will be Boise State, Cal Baptist, Ball State, Southern Utah, Wyoming, North Dakota, Sam Houston State, Northern Colorado, Montana State, New Mexico State, Colorado State and WCC rival Santa Clara.
The Dons
The Dons are coming off a very strong showing at the WSU Cougar Cup last week in Pullman, Wash., where they captured sixth with their third-best 54 hole score in almost a decade. The Dons are going with their familiar lineup of co-captain Samantha Gong, juniors Pearl Rojanapeansatith and Joan Soewondo and sophomores Annika Borrelli and Jade Siphomsay. Last week, Borrelli led the Dons, finishing tied for 16th with a 1-under 215, her first collegiate 54 hole tournament under par.
"I'm so excited to come off of my best college performance last week in Washington," said Borrelli. "Looking forward to this week's tournament, I know I didn't compete as strongly as I would like to last year on at this tournament. I'm excited to have redemption on this golf course! "
Gong's confidence is very high right now, her final two rounds of the WSU Cougar Cup were very strong and now she returns to a course where she has had a lot of success in her career. Last year, Gong finished tied for 13th at this event and carded a season-high 12 birdies.
