SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Working through wet, rainy conditions the USF Dons' women's soccer team (5-7-2, 1-4) came up short against the BYU Cougars (10-3-1, 5-0) 3-1 Wednesday night at Negoesco Stadium. USF's defense was hard at work all night as they held one of the best offensive teams in the nation to only three goals after the Cougars had scored 20 total goals in their previous three conference matches.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- BYU opened the scoring four minutes into the match as Bella Folino scored through the rainy conditions.
- The Cougars tacked on another goal 31 minutes later courtesy of Mikayla Colohan.
- The second half began with a fury of action as the Cougars scored their third goal 10 seconds into the half thanks to Cameron Tucker.
- USF scored their first goal of the night only 20 seconds later on an outstanding play from Marissa Vasquez.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Vasquez is now tied for the team lead in goals with three after scoring the lone Dons' goal on Wednesday night.
- Gabby Rizzo played 52 minutes off the bench in her return from injury.
- Goalkeeper Molly Eby added four saves to her WCC leading total of 72.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"Very disappointing to give up a goal four minutes into the match, but I thought our team competed as hard as in any game we have played in all season tonight. Our pressure was very good at times. I just didn't think we had the quality in the final third that we needed to beat BYU tonight. Obviously BYU is an outstanding team with some very good athletes and outstanding soccer players. We gave them all they could handle tonight.
Marissa Vasquez scored a brilliant goal in the second half and she has been good for us all season. I thought
Jamesen Ward was very good in the midfield tonight as well as
Kenna Roth at the back. We need to prepare for a much improved Pacific team Saturday night in Stockton."
