WSOC | Dons and Gaels Ends in a Draw

MORAGA, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team struck first early in the opening half but were unable to tack on any insurance goals.  After regulation and two overtimes, the Dons and Gaels were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Saint Mary's Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore Jameson Ward knocked in the Dons' only goal in the 17th minute off a corner kick by freshman forward Marissa Vasquez.  It is Ward's first career goal and the first career assist for Vasquez.

USF (1-0-1) finished the day with 23 shots with 10 of those on goal.  Senior Ashley Humphrey tallied six of those shots with four on goal.  However, the Dons could not get a second shot past Saint Mary's (0-1-1) keeper Taylor Poland.

Poland (0-1-1) finished with eight saves.  The eight saves were matched by Dons' keeper Molly Eby (1-0-1) who turned away eight of the 14 shots that came her way.

SMC tied the contest up in the 29th minute on a costly mistake by the Dons.  USF was attempting to clear the ball when Eby's free kick bounced right off the back of the Gaels' Carley Hittenmiller.  The ricochet bounced past Eby to tie the game up at 1-1.

In the second half there was no real drama, the Dons outshot the Gaels 14-7.  However, the Gaels did appear to score the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute but were ruled offside.  Saint Mary's were called offside four times on the afternoon.

"I think we did a lot of good things in the match today," said head coach Jim Millinder. "Of course, we are disappointed we didn't get a result. Molly came up with a big save in the first half. We had a lot of chances; the finish wasn't clean enough. We outshot them a by a lot, especially in the second half and overtime, but we will learn from it.  We have a lot of new talent out there and it takes time to build the relationships. But we have a lot of work to do still to clean up in the back and in the midfield and specifically up front.  I think we are creating enough chances to score two and three, but we aren't. But that's just about training with each other, getting familiar with each other. All in all, happy with the effort, not happy with the result, but we will learn from it and get better as we get ready for Stanford on Wednesday."

The Dons will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Stanford, Calif., to take on the Cardinal at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday's match will be streamed on the Pac-12 Network with Troy Clardy calling the action.
