STANFORD, Calif. – Battling until the final whistle, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (2-2-1) fell to No. 11 Stanford (4-2-0), 1-0, in a hard-fought matchup at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium on Thursday night.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Known as one of the most successful teams in their home venue, Stanford came out firing right away against the Dons, tallying four shots within the first 13 minutes of action. Showing her skills early, goalkeeper Molly Eby tallied the first four saves of her night by denying all four of the Cardinal attacks in what would be just the beginning of a career performance.
- As the first half played on, the two teams would momentum back and forth, which included a stretch of three straight shots from Kaylin Lunsford, Jayd Sprague and Kalena Teuful in the 26th minute. Although the Dons would come as close as hitting the crossbar, neither side could ultimately find the back of the net. At the halftime break, the score remained 0-0 with Stanford ahead in total shots, 12-4.
- Unable to find much rhythm offensively in the second half, the Dons kept the Cardinal off the scoreboard until the 72nd minute when Jojo Harber, who was playing in her first match this season, delivered what would be the game-winning goal for Stanford.
- Keeping their foot on the gas, the Cardinal did not allow USF to register a shot in the final 45 minutes of action while also pushing forward on the attack. In the second half alone, Eby recorded 9 saves. Following a tremendous play that saw Catherine Hill sprint and slide to block Stanford's last attempt at a goal, the Cardinal buckled down to deny the Dons down the stretch and would go on to secure their third shutout victory at home so far this season by a final score of 1-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- In goal, Eby enjoyed a career-night by tallying 13 saves in total. Overall, these 13 saves marked just the second double-digit save performance of Eby's career and the most since her 11 saves at Stanford on Aug. 24, 2018.
- Individually, Sprague tallied at least one shot for the third consecutive match while Teuful pushed her streak to ten straight games with at least one shot (dating back to the start of 2020-21 season)
