SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After pushing No. 11 Stanford to the brink on Thursday, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (3-2-1) got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon, defeating Portland State, 2-0, at Negoesco Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Wasting no time on offense, the Dons fired the first three shots of the contest as Kalena Teufel, Marissa Vasquez and Jamesen Ward all attempted to score within the first eight minutes of action.
- As the two sides traded shots in the minutes to follow, the Dons got on the board first in the 27th minute on a goal from Teufel inside of the box. On the play, Samantha Curwood-Wagner delivered a perfect pass to Teufel in stride, who then put it home to give USF the early lead.
- Tallying four more shots of their own to close out the half, the Dons remained on top 1-0 at the halftime break. Notably, Sunday marked the fifth consecutive game and the fifth time in six matches this season that USF has held their opponent off the scoreboard in the first half.
- Out of the locker room, the Dons continued to apply pressure as Sydney Cooper tapped in her first goal of the match on an assist from Teufel in the 54th minute to extend USF's advantage to 2-0.
- Just five minutes later, Cooper converted on another missed opportunity by the Vikings as a yellow card from Hailey Green gave the Dons a penalty kick at 58:20. Widening the gap, Cooper blasted her shot past the diving Sidney O'billovich to push the lead to 3-0 in favor of USF.
- Locking down defensively, the Dons would allow Portland State to only register one final shot in the 85th minute following Cooper's third goal. Riding a total team effort to the finish line, USF would hang on to secure their third shutout of the season and their second straight shutout at home by a final score of 3-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- For Cooper, Saturday marked the first time the San Clemente native has tallied two goals in a collegiate match. Overall, it was also her first time scoring this fall as she had not scored since Apr. 17 against Pacific last spring.
- For Teufel, her goal against the Vikings was also her first since Sept. 19, 2019 at UC Riverside.
- As a team, USF outshot Portland St. 15-5, including an 8-4 advantage on shots on goal. Additionally, the Dons also recorded 8 corner kicks to the Vikings 0.
POSTGAME WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"A clean sheet and a win at home is always brilliant. In terms of the bigger picture, we didn't control the match in the way we wanted, but there were some flashes of some good football in the final third. Need to keep looking at the positives and move forward with a good week of training before we travel over to Texas." -Head Coach
Jim Millinder
UP NEXT:
USF will head back on the road for a two-game road stretch in Texas as they travel to Dallas for a showdown with SMU on Thursday, Sept. 16 followed by a match at Baylor on Sunday, Sept. 19. Looking ahead, the Dons will return home to Negoesco Stadium next on Saturday, Sept. 25 when they host defending national champion Santa Clara.
