Dons Knock Off Reigning Champion No. 19 Santa Clara

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Dons used a strong defensive effort and timely late-game offense to knock off the reigning National Champion No. 19 Santa Clara on Saturday night at Negoesco Stadium. Notably, it was USF's first-ever win at home over the Broncos and just the second time in program history the Dons have taken down Santa Clara.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The first half was a defensive showcase by both teams as goalkeeper Molly Eby saved four Broncos' shots on goal leading to a scoreless first 45 minutes.
  • Jamesen Ward used a nifty pass from Marissa Vasquez to set up the first goal of the night at the 55' mark in the game. It was Ward's first goal of the season and brought the Dons' faithful to their feet as her shot squeezed past the left hand of the Bronco goalie.
  • Vasquez wasn't done making plays on offense as she scored at the 70' mark, putting the Dons on top by two. Ultimately, these two goals would be all USF needed as the Dons hung on to blank Santa Clara by the same score, 2-0.
  • Following an upgrade to the turf of the pitch this offseason, Saturday night's win marked the fourth shutout in eight matches for the Dons to begin the 2021 season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • With a goal and an assist to her credit, Vasquez was a key cog in the effort Saturday night. It was her second goal and third assist so far this season.
  • Eby continued her strong start to the 2021 season with her second shut out of the season. Overall, Eby saved eight Bronco goal attempts in the winning effort.
  • For Ward, her first goal got the Dons' on the board and served as a catalyst for the USF offense throughout the match.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"It was a great team effort. We've had some great performances but that was probably the best 90 minutes we've ever played in my 10 years at USF. Our shape and effort was good, we created numerous chances and both of our goals were on counter attacks. Molly was big time in goal. Everybody brought their A-game with them, and it's very rewarding to see it end with a great victory."

UP NEXT:
  • USF now goes on the road to begin WCC play as they head east to take on the Saint Mary's Gaels. In their last match, the Gaels shutout the Nevada Wolfpack 3-0 in Moraga.
