Ward Scores Twice as USF Knocks Off Lions

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Returning to the road for their second match of the week, the USF Dons women's soccer team (6-5-5, 1-3-2) earned an impressive 4-3 road victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions (3-5-6, 1-5) Saturday night at Sullivan Field.

Jamesen Ward had a tremendous game for the Dons as she scored her third and fourth goals of the season off penalty kicks, while Kaylin Lunsford found the back of the net for the fifth time this season to help USF get their fifth win away from the Hilltop this season. In goal for the Dons, Kira Ybarra picked up her first collegiate victory as she recorded three saves against LMU on Saturday night.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • It didn't take long for the scoring to get started in Southern California as Ward got the Dons on the scoreboard at the four minute mark off a penalty kick to put USF up early in the contest.
  • USF wasn't ready to relent on the offensive attack as just two minutes later Lunsford scored a goal following a tremendous pass from Lindsey Chau that pushed the Dons' advantage to 2-0 inside the first 10 minutes of play.
  • LMU was able to claw back at the 21 minute mark scoring their first goal of the match to make it 2-1 in the first half.
  • The Dons weren't done putting goals on the board as off a nicely placed Marissa Vasquez corner kick the Dons deflected a shot off the Lions' defender that found its way past the keeper to give USF the 3-1 lead at the 27 minute mark of the match.
  • Clawing their way back into the match, the Lions were able to score a pair of goals late in the first half as the score was tied at 3-all heading into halftime.
  • Neither offense was able to build much momentum early in the second half as both defenses made key adjustments before the Dons broke through. Ward once again found herself in a position to give USF the lead off a penalty kick and placed a beautiful shot right at the bottom left of the goal to push the Dons past LMU to secure the 4-3 road victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Ward completed a tremendous individual week by scoring two goals against the Lions as she's now third on the Dons' roster with four goals scored this season.
  • Lunsford continued her strong offensive season by scoring her fifth goal of the season to help USF expand their lead in the first half.
  • Chau is now the Dons' assist leader following her pass to set up Lunsford's goal as the Southern California native played 68 minutes in the victory.
  • Ybarra played a great second half in goal to earn her first win at the college level while also securing three saves for the Dons to pick up the team's first win in conference action.
POST GAME WITH THE DONS:

Head Coach Jim Millinder -- "It was a hard fought game tonight and a win on the road in a very tough conference. We started off very fast going up 2-0 and I thought we got complacent after that and let LMU back in the game. We made some poor decisions in the back and in the middle of the field and we let them back into the game. We came out with a different shape in the second half and battled hard to come away with a result against a very organized LMU team. We need to be more consistent in our play for 90 minutes. We have a couple days off to rest and travel back down to USD on Friday."

UP NEXT:
The Dons are back on the road next Saturday as they will be back in Southern California to take on the San Diego Toreros (2-10-4, 0-5-1) at 7:00 p.m. from Torero Stadium. USF won last year's matchup on the Hilltop by a 3-0 score as Lunsford, Vasquez and Gabby Rizzo each scored goals for USF.
